This morning as I was doing a little
dog training, the quiet dawn was interrupted with the first strains of Guns n
Roses, "Sweet Child of Mine". Instantly, I had a memory from high
school. It was so clear that I could see the faces of my friends and the Dr.
Pepper and Donuts we all had for breakfast. All I could do was smile in the
early morning light.
It is amazing to me the power of the
human brain to recall a memory so long ago. I remember the sights, the smells,
the people, and their faces.
All connected to the first few notes
of a song.
What songs take you back in time?
In high school, I served as part of a
community service program where students could work in the community. I worked
with a senior center and a Head Start program. The seniors sincerely taught me
more than I ever could have imagined. I read the mail to those who could no
longer see, talked with those whose family would not visit, and met a beautiful
lady named Myrtle Jeffries. She touched my heart. She introduced me daily to certain
patients with dementia and patted their hand and told me
Alzheimers is a devastating disease.
Alzheimers is a devastating disease.
I got to learn at a young age how
awful it is and that is a story for another time.
However,
The research is out that music helps
dementia and stroke patients. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704538404574540163096944766.html
The link is a great article from 2009
in the Wall Street Journal about the use of IPOD therapy for stroke and
dementia. Please read when you get a chance.
If you are a caregiver for someone
with Alzheimers, please seek out a support system because you really are not
alone and for more information see the Alzheimers Association website: www.alz.org
Be blessed!
